INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT VOLUNTEER

The Volunteer Abroad Programme is an International training initiative that allows people from all over the world to build their understanding around some of the biggest issues of our time while preparing to assist community-driven projects in Zambia, Malawi or Mozambique.

The first period will begin with studying history, the underlying causes of poverty, its effects on people and project-oriented solutions. In between studies volunteers also carry out field investigations learning about social issues through conversations with people and experts.

6-month project period, you will live and work with your trio in a community in either Zambia, Malawi or Mozambique. Here you will work as a volunteer with a community-led longterm project within one of the Humana People to People’s focus areas. They can include Health, Education, Agriculture, Community Development or Environment.

A one month evaluation period concludes the volunteer programme.

Programme outline

Period One (3 months)

During the first 3 months of the programme you will live, work and study together with your team at the learning centre – DRH Lindersvold. Here you will:

Participate in relevant courses and study topics related to the work you will do as a volunteer. For example community development, the underlying causes of poverty and the marginalization of certain communities. Other areas include the impact of the climate crisis in different parts of the world, cultural awareness and recognition of privilege and much more.

In addition, you will carry out fieldwork and other outgoing activities. Examples include visiting organizations, people and projects and participating in conferences and manifestations.

Furthermore, you will learn and practice practical skills such as maintenance, gardening, simple construction work, and project management.

In any event, you will be part of an international community of like-minded activist and share responsibility for the daily running of the learning centre. Become an active part of the cooking, cleaning, gardening and arranging social activities.

Period Two (6 months)

During the 6-month project period, you will live and work in a community in either Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia or India. You will participate as a volunteer at a community-led long-term project at a Humana People to People project.

However, it is impossible to be a good volunteer without listening to and understanding the needs of the community where you will work. Therefore, you will spend time at the beginning of the project period to get to know the people and the community – to listen and learn.

As a volunteer, you will work with a project within one of the Humana People to People’s focus areas. They can include Health, Education, Agriculture, Community Development or Environment. For example: Young Farmers’ Club in Zambia, Early Childhood Development centres in Malawi or Kadam Step Up in India, which aims at supporting out-of-school children to go back to school.

Period Three (1 month)

The last month of the programme is spent at DRH Lindersvold. Here you have the time to reflect on your experience, evaluate the goals that you set up for yourself, and conclude the programme with your team.

Most likely, the first nine months of the programme have been a life-changing experience for you. As a result, you need time to digest and discuss these very intense months with people who have been on that same journey. Together you will conclude on the effectiveness of the preparation period and the impact of the work in the field. You will also make recommendations on how to improve the programme.

An important aspect of the last month is to share the many stories you have gathered. Both your own experience on what you have learned and the stories of the people you have met and worked with.
