Learning by Doing

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

At our learning center, you will live, learn and work with people from all over the world. Through exchanging ideas and experiences, we create a rich cultural life and diverse atmosphere. The Volunteers and teachers share the responsibility of running the center together, by using consensus-based decision making when implementing new ideas or developments for the future.

CREATING CHANGE TOGETHER

After the 3 months training period, volunteers are ready to work 6 months together with Community-driven Development Projects in either Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique or India. These projects have been part of our partners Humana People to People efforts to create a significant impact on health, education and environmental issues in these countries for almost 40 years.

AGRICULTURE

Humana People to People trains small-scale farmers in sustainable agriculture practices among them as conservation farming, and equips the farmers with knowledge that they can use to adjust to the changing conditions.

As an integrated part of the training, the farmers get organized around exploring and sharing water resources, securing inputs and marketing of the produce. General knowledge and skills within nutrition, health and community development are also included. This training is called Farmers’ Clubs.

Farmers’ Clubs aim at organizing small-scale farmers to join forces, resources and further the agricultural production of each farmer. Farmers are introduced to low-cost farming solutions, environment conservation farming methods and financial support systems to trigger the process of farmer economic development.

Teacher Training

Teacher training programmes are specifically designed to train teachers for public primary schools, especial in rural areas where there is a need for teachers. The programme strives to offer inspiration, action research and experimentation, often providing challenging pedagogical routes that serve students, teachers, school institutions and communities alike.

The programs at the Children’s Schools and Children’s Towns are addressing marginalized children and youth aiming at giving them a solid foundation for their future, learning academic skills, practical skills and also learning social skills and developing their personalities through tailor made training programs aimed at all aspects of a young person’s development.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Humana’s Community Development programmes seeks to build the capacity of families and their communities to work towards the common goal of improving their children’s lives.

The Child Aid project is what it says: aid to children, to grow, learn and live in safe and healthy conditions. All parents wish to create such conditions for their children, but many do not have the resources to manage on their own.

the program recognizes that in order to nurture children successfully, the entire community must be strengthened. Families are brought together to address health and sanitation, income generation, education, district development, environmental awareness, and participation for children.

HEALTH

Humana People to People is helping to fight the spread of major infectious, communicable and prevalent diseases through three community mobilization for prevention programs.

Community Health Agents is a program, which promotes universal health awareness and mobilization to prevent the most common diseases and link people to health services. People in remote communities far from health centers are engaged by the program through community based mobilizers.

Visits are made to families and provided with information and support for the prevention and treatment of malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB and other common diseases. Community mobilizers give advice on family planning and pay special attention to pregnant women and children under the age of 5.

Agriculture

The Farmers Club Project: this project promotes climate smart agriculture techniques through demonstration plots. These Demonstration plots are supporting organized groups of 50 farmers to experiment with farming techniques, aiding farmers to take the new knowledge back to their land and increase their crop production.

The clubs also enable farmers to increase their livelihood by selling together as a group; this strengthens farmers ability to negotiate more fair prices while giving them access to potential finances and therefore building their capacity for sustainable agricultural practices.

Community Development

The Child Aid Projects: this project supports children, parents and the whole community to work together to improve living conditions for children and create opportunities for them to not only survive but to develop to their full potential. Child Aid is driven by the community and seeks place control of the development processes and decision-making in the hands of the people who are affected.

Health

The Zambian Family Activity Project: this project aims to support orphans and other vulnerable children in Zambia, who are affected by HIV and AIDS. The project aims to improve conditions for children by promoting income-generating activities, giving nutritional help, and supporting children’s education.
