PREPARATION FOR THE FIRST PEOPLE’S EXAM

by Pilar Escudero Galindo from Spain

The day has arrived. Today the 31st of May, we have our first people exam. I cannot deny that I am nervous. Very nervous. Today it is the first time that I will speak in English in front of people through a presentation. I am looking forward to doing it though. I want to show myself that I can do it and that it is not a big deal. I just have to be focus, know what I want to communicate and do it.
Four days ago we didn’t know what these people exam exactly was. Gert, our teacher explained to us that it was not a traditional evaluation. It was a team presentation in which we would show our learning about Humana People to People.
This topic is not so difficult, we are actually very motivated with Humana People to People’s projects, so this makes us eager to communicate to other people what we will be part of. Also, we have been discussing all these new concepts in class so we know what we are talking about.
First, we did a brainstorm of ideas, concepts, and topics that we should talk about in the presentation. It was late in the evening we all were so tired, but we had to get started with the presentation otherwise it wouldn’t be ready for Friday. At the end of the meeting, we got our plan. We had an organizing scheme to follow. After this, we went to bed because we all were extremely tired.
Next day, we talked about the different parts of the presentation and who will present each of them. That was easy; we are a group that always agree pretty easily. From then on, we started working on it. We were very busy during the week; we barely had time to prepare the presentation because Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we had classes the whole day so we just could gather the information in the evening.
But, when we were working we were very focused. Carolina and Fatu were reading over and over their part, they were very focused on doing a good job. Manu was helping Carolina with the speech and also writing a letter for the presentation. Paquita was very helpful she was doing the PowerPoint presentation which was a great help since she is quicker than us doing computer jobs. And I was, of course, freaking out because I thought that I wouldn’t have enough time.
The day is here, I woke up early to write down the information that I want to share. I didn’t like to read so I was memorizing the whole morning.
Our guests are here, Ron, Walters, Gonzalo, Thomas, Gert, Tina, Silvia, Mihaela, Anna and ourselves. We are ready, I am ready. Paquita is setting up the laptop. Gert is standing in front of everybody. This is starting in 3, 2, 1…
