Another Kind of Learning

I never had the opportunity to learn a different way of gathering information. For me, studying has always been something easy, something that concerned me and my ability to read a text, interpret a scientific or philosophical thought, a graph, a diagram, or read a statistic and detect its salient data. I know this method and apply it every time I need to learn something new. I have never come out of this scheme in my life. I’ve never had other examples of learning.

In this school, I am dealing with something that I have never experienced before… here everyone has the opportunity to express their point of view. And it is not necessary to be graduated in a certain area to be able to say that this or that thing works. Every aspect of everyone’s knowledge is respected and everyone has the same power of speech.

In the first instance, it was very difficult for me to have the patience to accept that others could express themselves with different timing than mine. I believe that one of the greatest challenges is exactly that, allowing others to be themselves and to respect their timing, pauses and the rhythm of their speech. This methodology teaches this.

The traditional teaching model is mainly aimed at the “filling” of content in the minds of individuals. In essence, the main objective of this model is to create people who “work” in an already established society, which perpetuates ways of behaving that have been implemented by others and which aim at maximum personal profitability. From an early age, we learn to put aside our point of view and our natural attitude to interface with reality, substituting it with a modality of knowledge that is already decided by adults. As a child, we soon learn to adhere to the dominant model, as this one takes advantage of our need for confirmation that is typical of childhood.

In this alternative model at DRH Lindersvold, we have the opportunity to learn by doing, participating, living together. Every moment is good to learn new things or get new points of view related to everything. Every aspect of the opinion is on the table for discussion and no one is excluded from this process. The traditional educational system makes people isolate themselves in order to be able, individually, to learn a concept. There are only a few educational institutions that contribute to developing a learning methodology that involves more people together, not just one. Often these few institutions are primary schools or perhaps private educational institutes that inherit foreign and “cutting edge” educational models.
